PPS adopts new calendar; changes elementary school tiers for 2024-25 school year

UPDATED 3/22/2024

At the Feb. 29 meeting of the School Board of the City of Portsmouth, the School Board voted to approve a school calendar with a pre-Labor Day start for the 2024- 25 school year. This change was implemented to best align with neighboring school divisions in the region.

Families can access the new calendar here and it will also be available on the Calendar webpage of ppsk12.us.

In addition to the calendar change for next year, the division will also be implementing changes to its school hours – specifically regarding its elementary school tiers. Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, schools assigned to “A” and “B” elementary school tiers will be updated as follows:

Elementary A Schools (8:35 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.)

  • Churchland Academy (as well as Churchland Preschool Center)
  • Churchland Primary and Intermediate
  • Douglass Park
  • Lakeview
  • Simonsdale
  • Victory
  • Waterview

Elementary B Schools (9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

  • Brighton
  • Cradock
  • Hodges Manor
  • Park View
  • Westhaven

Please note Churchland Elementary School will now join the Middle School Tier (8 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.).

Douglass Park Elementary School, which was previously on the middle school tier, will now be fully on the Elementary A schedule.

All preschool centers (Churchland, Mt. Hermon, and Olive Branch) will also be on the Elementary A tier.

Again, these changes will not take place until the start of next school year; however, this information will be available on the School Hours webpage on ppsk12.us. Please note this will be the tier schedule for the next five years (2024-25 to 2028- 2029). The division’s next tier rotation will take place in the 2029-30 school year.
