Health Services
Welcome to the Department of Health Services. Our purpose is to work closely with students, families, and school personnel to promote student health and academic success. We employ a team of registered and licensed practical nurses that are CPR/AED/ and First-Aid certified. Our team is responsible serving the school community and advocating for students’ health and safety.
Essential Duties:
Provides nursing care to students; implements grade level screening program for students; maintains and operates a school clinic; prepares and maintains student and clinic records.
Provides health care services for students in school system;
Performs nursing assessment of each student sent to school health clinic;
Makes observations and assesses condition; implements appropriate plan of care for each student examined;
After observation and assessment, counsels with student, parents and/or teachers about problems observed;
Administers medications and/or treatments; administers first-aid;
Screens students for hearing, vision, height, weight, and blood pressure at appropriate grade levels;
Refers students for outside medical care, as needed;
Logs information pertaining to student/staff clinic visits and medical care given;
Provides instruction on nutrition, hygiene, grooming, weight control, first aid, disease prevention, substance abuse and other related health concerns; provides health educational materials and information
Provides health counseling to students, parents and school personnel;
Maintains records of medication administration as well as treatments and procedures performed;
Reviews student immunization records on all students to ensure that each student is in compliance with state immunization laws for school attendance; maintains immunization records on all students;
Provide immunizations to students and staff of Portsmouth Public Schools, as directed by the School Physician;
