Portsmouth Public Schools provides early childhood special education and related services to eligible children with disabilities age two through six (by September 30th), inclusive. For a child to be eligible for special education services, the child must have a documented disability that creates an adverse educational impact and requires specialized instruction to access the general education curriculum.

We aim to provide special education services for 2-4 year old children in the child's natural setting including: home-based services, services in a Head Start or other community setting, and half/full day placements in our public preschool center classrooms. In our public preschool center classrooms, we provide services in our general education 4 year old program, our reverse inclusion 3 year old classrooms, our 2 year old virtual program, or in special education classes.

We also provide a free developmental screening.

WHAT IS A DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING?

A developmental screening is a brief test to determine if a child is functioning at age level in the different areas of development such as personal/social skills, adaptive/self help skills, motor skills, communication skills and cognitive/thinking skills. The results of a developmental screening are helpful to the Child Find team to make a recommendation as to whether or not more specific testing needs to occur.

Developmental Screening Includes:

Fine and Motor Screening, Speech Articulation, and Language Screening, and hearing and vision screening.
